Professional Rationale
This is a basic open chain strengthening exercise that helps to engage the gluts and abductors of the hip at a baseline level. It has minimal functional carryover, however is a great exercise for any patient with abductor and glut weakness including post knee and hip arthroplasty.

Client Rationale
This exercise is to help to strengthen the hip abductor muscles. These muscles abduct your hip(bring your leg away from midline), and functionally stabilize your pelvis and hips.



Instructions
  • Lie on your side with your bottom knee bent.
  • Keep your top leg straight and lift it up 30-45 degrees.
  • Return slowly.
  • Do not bend your top knee.
  • Do not lift leg higher than 45 degrees.
