This is a basic open chain strengthening exercise that helps to engage the hamstrings and gluteus. It has minimal functional carryover, however is a great exercise for any patient with hamstring and glut weakness including post knee and hip arthroplasty.
Client Rationale
This exercise is to help to strengthen the hamstring and gluteus muscles. These muscles extend your hip, and functionally stabilise your pelvis and hips.
Instructions
- Hold onto chair for balance.
- Keep knee straight.
- Lift leg straight back about 20 degrees.
- Return slowly.
- Do not allow low back to extend.
- Do not lift leg too high.
- Do not lean forward at the waist.
