Seated Piriformis Stretch



Professional Rationale
A basic stretch for the piriformis. It should not done in the presence of radicular symptoms or when nerve tension is present. Using a tennis ball for self massage can also facilitate piriformis tightness.

Client Rationale
This is a stretch for your piriformis muscle. The piriformis is a muscle that is deep in your buttock. The sciatic nerve runs between two layers of the piriformis. It helps to stabilize your pelvis and when irritated, it can tighten up, squeezing the sciatic nerve and causing pain.



Instructions
  • Pull your thigh towards your opposite hip.
  • Sit on the floor and cross your leg over your opposite straight leg.
  • Feel a stretch in your buttock.
  • Do not stretch to the point of pain.
