Pronation and Supination

Professional Rationale
A good preventative exercise for overuse injuries as it focuses on the eccentric strengthening of the pronators and supinators. Patients should not be doing this exercise if it is painful as this is often the motion that causes repetitive stress in the first place.

Client Rationale
This is an exercise used to help strengthen your forearm pronators and supinators. These muscles can get weak and painful with repetitive use as with gripping and pinching.

Instructions
  • Sit with forearm supported on a table or on your lap with a dowel or hammer in your hand, gripping it at the bottom.
  • Turn palm down, then turn your palm upwards.
  • Move in a slow and controlled manner.
  • Do not move balistically or rapidly.
  • Do not the hammer 'fall' to each side.
