Iliotibial Band Release - foam roller

Professional Rationale
The ITB is very difficult to stretch and the foam roller allows increased blood flow to the ITB and helps to break up scar tissue. ITB work is an integral part of the rehab of any lower extremity injury.

Client Rationale
The iliotibial band runs from the top of your pelvis to the side of your knee. It is connective tissue that helps to stabilize your pelvis and upper leg during standing activities and transitional motions. It is difficult to stretch the ITB due to its length and due to the fact that it is connective tissue. The foam roller helps to break up scar tissue that makes the ITB tight creating significant imbalances throughout the lower chain (pelvis and lower leg).

Instructions
  • Lie on your side with the foam roller just above the side of your thigh.
  • Bend your opposite leg over your bottom leg.
  • Roll yourself up and down on the roller along the outside of your thigh.
  • Use your top leg to push yourself back and forth.
  • Do not come up to the point of your hip.
  • Do not roll down to the bony part of your knee.
