Great Toe Extension Stretch
Professional Rationale
Great toe extension is a key motion to assess with any patient presenting with lower chain injury or pain, particularly in athletes participating in endurance weightbearing sports. You can maximise the effectiveness of the stretch by also mobilising the joint.
Client Rationale
Extension of the great (big) toe is an important part of the push-off phase of walking or running. If you do not have enough extension in this joint, it can lead to injury at that joint, but more importantly, it causes your foot to compensate, and this can cause injury at other structures and parts of your body.
Instructions
- Place bottom of big toe on the edge of a wall or a doorway.
- Let other toes rest of the floor.
- Feel a stretch through the big toe joint and through the arch of the foot.
- Don't stretch to the point of pain.
