Glut Set
Professional Rationale
A basic glut set that is most useful in the acute stages of rehab, or rehab of the geriatric population, especially those with stenosis.
Client Rationale
This is an isometric exercise for your gluteus maximus. An isometric contraction occurs when you 'flex' or 'make' a muscle without moving the joint it acts on. The glut max extends the hip (brings the leg back) however, it is also a major stabilizer for your legs. When you are standing on one leg the gluts help to keep your pelvis level. Without good support from the glut, there is dramatically increased loads on the lower spine, sacroiliac joints, and the hips. This exercise is very helpful during acute phases of injury and pain, as the gluts are very lazy muscles, and become immediately inhibited with pain and injury. You can also do this exercise in sitting and standing.
Instructions
- Start with knees bent and feet on the floor.
- Squeeze your buttocks without lifting your hips off the surface.
- Relax.
- Do not hold your breath.
- Do not allow pelvis to move.
