Bent Over Row
Professional Rationale
This exercise is a scapular stabilization exercise and is recommended for any shoulder pathology as long as the patient is able to move the arm against gravity, is able to complete these pain-free, and does not have any post-surgical restrictions for strengthening against gravity.
Client Rationale
This exercise is used to strengthen the muscles that stabilize and control the position of your shoulder blade. The shoulder blade stabilizers are a group of muscles that help to rotate the shoulder blade in the correct sequence, as well as keeping it held against the ribcage. These muscles are strengthened by doing high repetitions and little to no weight using specific motions and positions. These exercises are performed in a pain-free range of motion and should not produce any sharp pain.
Instructions
- Use weight as indicated by your therapist.
- Start with your arm hanging straight down and thumb pointing forward.
- Raise arm up, bending at the elbow.
- Slowly return to start position.
- Do not rush through exercise.
- Do not raise arm higher than the level of your waist.
