Anterior Cervical Strengthening Supine



Professional Rationale
This is a higher level stabilization exercise for those with chronic degenerative changes or a chronic instability.

Client Rationale
This is a cervical stabilization exercise that helps to strengthen the front muscles of the neck while the head is moving - ie. it strengthens the dynamic stabilizers.



Instructions
  • Return to start position and repeat to the opposite side.
  • Lie on your back with your head hanging over the back of the bed.
  • Tuck your chin in, turn to the right, then lift your head slightly.
  • Keep your chin tucked throughout the exercise.
  • Do not allow the chin to poke forward or the shoulders to move forward or upwards at all.
  • Do not clench the teeth or tighten the jaw. Only lift as far as it feels easy to control and hold this position.
  • Do not hold at the point at which strain is felt.
