The term cloud is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on how the Internet is usually depicted in diagrams.
With Cloud computing Mavenlive provides users with “resources as a service” over the Internet.
The service provided includes:
  • Infrastructure (i.e. servers) as a service (IaaS).
  • Platform (i.e. operating system) as a service (PaaS).
  • Software as a service (SaaS).
Mavenlive’s cloud computing service provides powerful applications online that are accessed from a web browser ( a PC, Mac, laptop, even smartphone) while the software and data are stored on the servers.

Cloud computing relieves Mavenlive’s customers from the need to own the physical infrastructure to host to the software. Mavenlive’s customers avoid capital expenditure by renting usage of a powerful server array with multiple redundencies. Our customers consume resources as a service and pay only for resources that they use. Cloud-computing offerings are billed on a subscription basis.

Mavenlives’s Cloud computing users can avoid capital expenditure on hardware, software, and services when they pay only for what they use. Consumption is billed as a subscription (e.g. time based, like a newspaper) basis with no upfront cost. There is a flat fee of $300/yr for each account for the use of the software, server array, and storrage. This is far less then the depreciation cost of a server with the multiple redundant disc array needed to assure that patient information is never lost. Maintenance, IT support, updating and upgrading alone would be several times this cost. The benefits of this approach is low cost to entry, shared infrastructure and costs, low management overhead, and immediate access to powerful applications. Users can terminate the contract at any time, thereby avoiding risk and uncertainty. The contract is a yearly contract and Mavenlive is so confident in the satisfaction of new users that in the first year if the contract is cancelled in the first six months Mavenlive will refund the user $150.00.

The cloud computing paradigm shift is similar to the displacement of electricity generators by electricity grids in early in the 20th century.
